I love that you get a surround sound like atmosphere with any headset without having to by the pricey $350 headsets just to enjoy surround sound and even more so with the sound system part of the app. The rich sounds off everything around you can be heard so clearly its amazing. I'm a gamer, and with the dolby atmos app it definitely adds that extra immersive quality and advantage to my gaming experience. I have noticed however the surround sound app for headsets do differ from one headset to another, for example the surround sound and bass quality are much more apparent on my astro A40's than it is with my turtle beach XO one. Other than that the app is amazingly awesome. Okay I'm going to get this out of the way. Yes, Atmos costs $15.
But I'm reviewing the app, not the price. It works fairly well. Granted it's only virtual surround sound, not the real deal. Second, is a common misconception.
THIS APP DOES NOT MAKE NORMAL SPEAKER SURROUND!!! Surround sound isn't just created. Whether it be a movie, TV show, video game, or other it is intentionally created by audio engineers to get the audio you hear in a theater, so it will only work well with applications and videos that were designed to use Atmos.
But, overall, it works fairly well, and in my opinion is worth the $15 dollars. But due to the nature of the application versus the price, I'm only going to give it 4 stars. I hope you found this review useful. Dolby Atmos is so much more than just an 'app'. This is more a tool/plugin/mod that completely changes how you hear and perceive audio.
Dolby Atmos actually alters the audio quality & essentially turns any headphone or soundbar into a super-HD, surround sound device. It doesn't matter if you use a Microsft stereo headset, a Vizio soundbar, or some top of the line home theatre surround sound setup because regardless, Atmos will make it sound over 9000% better! For what it does, it makes it worth way more than $14.99. I can't even describe how great it sounds. If you don't believe me just download the app, plug in your headset, and get the 30-day free-trial. It takes 30 seconds to configure in the Xbox Settings, so make sure you do.
Once you have it setup the app has 3 demo videos, it really shows how amazing Atmos surround audio can be. (Not that I expect less of the inventors of surround sound.) Those videos sold me, so I'll be purchasing next month. Issues:. It deactivates DA w/headphones if you pull out of a game session (without quitting the game/app); you have to quit and restart the game or app (such as YT) to re-enable the DA effects. It slows down the system interface and makes everything laggy. Sometimes there are loud static-like popping sounds that can be heard in the main system interface as well as inside games and apps.

It makes the system unstable - some games and even apps refuse to launch after installing the app and activating the DA w/headphones option (takes forever and games are stuck at the start up loading screen). When you restart your console, or shutdown/power up for a second session, the app no longer works and defaults back to Windows Sonic. I literally have to delete, reinstall, and reconfigure the app EVERY time after a system shutdown in order to use DA w/headphones.
